FAQ/Getting Started > General Questions about CrossFit > Ok, but I work construction, and I work hard all day long - that's my training. Why do I need anything else?
CrossFit has become immensely popular with First Responders and the military because it is exactly the kind of fitness that best prepares an individual for the unknown. Hard physical labor like construction work shares similarities in the sense that one never quite knows what is in store on the jobsite. Although the intensity in construction work is generally steady and moderate, the tasks can and usually do include odd lifting, heavy lifting, working overhead and stooping for long periods of time. In addition, construction workers expose themselves to all sorts of situations that can produce injury if one is not physically prepared.
Instead of coming home at the end of the day too tired and sore to enjoy life the way one would like, why not prepare physically so that work does not take such a toll? Just like any athlete, anyone performing hard physical labor can benefit from high intensity workouts that produce an increase in work capacity. In doing so, the everyday tasks on the jobsite can be performed at a lower percentage of the individual's maximum capacity. This leaves enough "gas in the tank" to enjoy activities outside of work, reduces the chance of injury on the job and can help to keep an individual healthy through his or her working career and into retirement.
